Topkapi Apartments is a family-run business, owned by Hamza and Yukiko.  Hamza has been working in Sultanahmet for the last 18 years, starting as an assistant in a carpet shop when he was just 13 years old, after he ran away from his life as a shepherd boy in a village in the mountains of the Cappadocia region.  He met Yukiko, an archaeologist, in the carpet shop on her way back from an excavation in her first year of her PhD program at Yale University, 9 years ago.  Since then she has graduated and has started working at Yale University, in New Haven, CT, where they live part of the year with their daughter Ayla.  While they are abroad, Hamza’s younger brother, Yusuf, helps run Topkapi Apartments.  In the summer months, they return to Turkey, with Hamza working in Sultanahmet and Yukiko spending most of her summer excavating in various parts of Turkey.
